Making Your Wardrobe Work For You!
5 November 2019 | Agni Skafidas
Morning hours can be so precious and the last thing you need is additional stress – created by your wardrobe!
Take the first step to decluttering and updating your wardrobe. We suggest taking a phased approach and going section by section. You can start with your tops, then move to your trousers and finish with your undies, for example. This way, the process doesn’t become overwhelming and you can enjoy immediate improvements.
Let’s start with tops as an example. Pull all your tops out of your wardrobe and put them into one area such as your bed. This gives you a great overview of what you own and you can review each item by asking yourself:
If you’ve answered “yes” to all questions, keep that top. You may have some items that you haven’t worn in a while like your seasonal wear. If you’re going to wear it in the next 6 months (e.g. winter jumpers), keep it. You can put such tops on a higher shelf until you’ll wear them regularly again.
If you haven’t worn something in the last 6 months and you’re not sure if you will in the next 6 months, create a “maybe “pile for these. You can put a little bow on their hanger or inside label and remove it when you’re wearing it. If you haven’t worn these in the next 6 months, donate or sell them then.
For those pieces you’ve answered “no” to one or more questions, it’s time to say good-bye. Still in good condition? Donate those tops to a local charity or sell them at a second hand shop.
As you’re putting your tops back into your wardrobe, decide how you best keep them. Is there enough space to hang them? Do you prefer folding them?
This is also a good time to consider separating your tops by function: Work tops, going out tops and casual tops. Do you want to hang the work tops (less ironing) and roll up casual tops (saves space)? You can quickly put your work outfit together and don’t have to rummage through piles of tops. If you want to take it a step further, you can add little markers to the hanger identifying the day you’ll wear the outfit.
We’ve now finished with one section (the tops), take another section like your trousers and follow the same steps.
By consciously deciding what you love and need, you should experience a renewed enjoyment of your wardrobe. However, if tackling your wardrobe alone seems daunting, engaging a professional organiser with personal stylist skills could save you time, space and energy.
Here’s to feeling fabulous!
